On behalf of the Greek Community at the University of Florida we would like to reinforce our stance on respect and inclusivity. Recently, one of our fraternities was accused of disrespecting veterans at a function in Panama City Beach. As values-based organizations, fraternities and sororities are committed to the belief that our members should conduct themselves with dignity and respect for others in all situations. This respect should be especially given to our veterans that fight every day to protect our Nation. Many of our members have or do serve in the military and many of our chapters support our troops and veterans in various ways. We trust that the fraternity and the University will investigate the allegations and determine the responsibility of the chapter through our shared accountability processes.
At UF, we are united by our core values of scholarship, service, leadership and community. Our four Greek governing councils- the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council – and their member organizations strive to foster an environment that is open and accepting of all. We do not condone or encourage the mistreatment of any person, no matter the circumstance. We will continue to devote resources to strengthening a culture of openness, acceptance and tolerance within our community. As always, we will continue to find ways to support our military and veterans.
